T-shirt sale helps pay for the new Huerfano County Judicial Center

Huerfano County is one of Colorado’s most impoverished counties. Its socioeconomic indicators consistently show struggling individual wealth and economic growth. However, an abundance of nearby natural features brings visitors to the area. Walsenburg serves as the gateway to the Great Sand Dunes National Park, the Spanish Peaks Wilderness Area, and Colorado’s Scenic Highway of Legends. From Walsenburg, recreation enthusiasts will also be able to access the planned Colorado Front Range Trail between New Mexico and Wyoming. Pass-through traffic from I-25 and US 160 offers an economic stimulus to Huerfano County as businesses support travelers with goods and services, such as food and beverages, gasoline, lodging, and retail. There are also future growth plans for new regional trails, recreational attractions, and visitor destinations. When making purchases—such as buying t-shirts—the tourist–traveler helps pay for the new Huerfano County Judicial Center with a one-cent sales tax. The burden of funding the direly needed courthouse would have been seemingly impossible without this sales tax initiative.
