Built in 1890, Pitkin County Courthouse has served continuously for 130 years as the county judicial center. The National Historic Landmark courthouse is one of Aspen’s most significant buildings with a notorious reputation and presence—it has hosted famous and “infamous” characters throughout its rich history.
While having renovations and upgrades over the years, this project reconciles discrepancies required to deliver the highest standard of current-day judicial services, including long-overdue infrastructure, technology, and security systems upgrades. Deficiencies in standard day-to-day court processes were resolved, including interface and separation needs, privacy requirements, and accessibility upgrades. As part of the retrofit, historically appropriate interior finishes were updated to affected areas, and a new courtroom was added, including a new judge chamber and jury deliberation room. The design solution honors the historic aesthetic while providing 21st-century court services.
